Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder. It is most common in women but can also affect men and children. This is because of the female anatomy and the urethra and anus are shorter and closer together.
Cystitis (the bladder inflammation) is commonly due to a bacterial infection. This is known as a urinary tract infection or UTI. It can happen any time and it can also be caused by sexual intercourse. Although
Harmless bacteria exist in your bowel to help your body digest food, the bacteria can enter your urinary tract where they multiply and may inflame the tissue, leading to an infection. The bacteria involved is usually E. Coli. This bacteria lives in the bowel. Cystitis occurs when uropathogenic bacteria from your bowel reaches your bladder by moving from the opening of your bowel (anus) into the tube that carries urine from your bladder (urethra) to outside your body.
Cystitis and URI's can also be caused and risk increased by:
- Bacteria – E. Coli
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Radiation therapy
- Some medicines
- Some chemicals found in bubble baths and spermicides
- Diabetes
- Lowered Immunity.
- Bladder catheter or urological disease
- Pregnancy
- Menopause
Symptoms of Cystitis & URI infection are:
- Strong, persistent urge to urinate.
- Pain or burning when urinating.
- Needing to urinate often
- Passing only small amounts of urine each time
- Feel uncomfortable in your lower abdomen, dull ache.
- Urine that smells, or looks cloudy or bloody.
- Blood in the urine
- Fever
Cystitis & UTI Prevention
- Keep hydrated. Drinking lots of water to help flush out bacteria.
- Urinating as soon as you feel the need.
- Urinate immediately after intercourse.
Shower at least once a day and after sex. - Wearing natural fibre underwear e.g, cotton, bamboo, hemp (not synthetic material – nylon/lycra etc) and loose fitting pants.
- Toilet hygiene – wipe yourself from front to back after urinating (for women). Do not cross contaminate.
- Eat natural yoghurt or kefir to restore the normal vaginal environment.
- TAKE High dose probiotics as prescribed by your practitioner.
- Find an alternative method of birth control if you use spermicides.
- Educate yourself on Natural Fertility Management – contraception practices and charting your healthy menstrual cycle.
- Eliminate sugar, processed and refined food from your diet.
- Organic coconut oil used before and after intercourse is beneficial because of its natural antibacterial properties and soothing action.
- Garlic (practitioner only) supplements are beneficial to take as a preventative protocol and also including onion and garlic into your daily diet. Natural antibactial and antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties due to the allicin content.
Possible complications of a UTI
Complications of UTIs aren’t common, but they can be serious and require immediate treatment by a doctor. They usually affect people diagnosed with diabetes, a weakened immune system, men with recurrent UTIs, or women who are pregnant.
If a UTI is left untreated, bacteria may travel to the kidneys causing kidney infection, damage and even kidney failure. Blood poisoning can happen and occurs when the infection spreads from the kidneys to the blood-stream.
If the infection moves to the kidneys, there may be high fever, back pain, diarrhoea and vomiting. If you have these symptoms, it is important to see your doctor. [1]

Support a back to the basic natural approach to eating. Visit your local farmer markets and buy organic produce where possible. Go vegetable crazy! Love your greens.
Food Sensitivity Testing is an easy way to take the guess work out of what may be contributing to you feeling unwell, suffering digestive problems, inflammation, bloating, skin conditions, asthma etc. A whole food natural diet is excellent to follow but what some people don’t realise is one man's food can be another man’s poison. Give your digestive tract a break and feed your body with food that heals. A stressed and inflamed digestive tract (gut) suffering dysbiosis needs help to build up a good microbiome balance. It is not only important for your ability to absorb and utilise nutrients but your gut health and immune system are inextricably linked. Seventy to eighty percent of your immune tissue is located within your digestive system and ninety percent of serotonin is made in the digestive tract. Serotonin is a key player in mood, anxiety, fear, and the general sense of happiness and wellbeing.
The intestinal microbiota (gut flora) helps in proper development of the host immune system, which in turn regulates the homeostasis of the microbiota. Good nutrition promoting good gut health microbiome promotes a healthy immune system.
The gastrointestinal tract is also sensitive to emotion. A troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just as a troubled brain can send signals to the gut. Therefore, a person's stomach or intestinal distress can be the cause or the product of anxiety, stress, or depression.
Don’t diet! Listen to your body. Eat mindfully in a relaxed environment and choose quality, not quantity. Enjoy fuelling your body and treating it well.
